Ireland Golf Trip Highlights

Ireland golf trips designed by Hidden Links deliver the ultimate Ireland golfing experience. Many would agree that the soul of the game lies here on the Emerald Isle, perhaps in the cemetery next to the first tee at Ballybunion! The other classic links of the southwest, including Lahinch, Waterville, Tralee, and Old Head also need no introduction, and collectively make this stretch of Ireland “the World’s Ultimate Golf Trail.”

But with the Wild Atlantic Way drawing many visitors north from Shannon, many Ireland golf aficionados now travel in that direction seemingly to the end of the earth, to a course anointed by Sports Illustrated as the “best in the world!,” mysterious Carne Golf Links!  How did a course even get built in such a remote location, yet alone one that is among the handful of most thrilling links courses a golfer could ever experience?

In fact, an entire series of formidable and thrilling links lines the Ireland northwest coast from Carne in Belmullet to remote Ballyliffin in northern Donegal.  Just follow the iconic “wave” signs that mark the route of the Wild Atlantic Way and you can’t miss any of them. Included in these is a 9-holer that rivals Pebble Beach for scenery, Cruit Island Golf Club, which can be incorporated into your tour for about the cost of a few pints in some of the Dublin pubs.  Make your way here especially in the evening and you may find yourselves holing out on the last to a standing ovation of local members taking in the view from the clubhouse patio.

Speaking of the Dublin pubs, Dublin boasts a compact cluster of some of the finest golf courses in Ireland, and it is possible to play Royal County Down, County Louth Golf Club (2004 Irish Open host), Portmarnock Resort & Jameson Golf Links, The K Club (2006 Ryder Cup venue), The Island Golf Club, and The European Club (greatest course in the world according to that famed Irish character and golf course designer, Pat Ruddy, who’s family owns and runs it!) from a single base, all while enjoying Dublin’s most iconic pubs each evening.

And these days golfers from all over the world come to Ireland to follow in the Footsteps of Giants™, and incorporate an extended stay in Northern Ireland, especially to play Royal County Down and Royal Portrush, courses where major champions Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, and Darren Clarke honed their games. Cap it off with a visit to Northern Ireland’s most famous attraction, the Giant’s Causeway! Whatever Ireland golf tour you choose, you may physically return home, but may find that you have also left your soul on the Emerald Isle!
