The K Club, Kildare Ireland

The K Club, Kildare Ireland Highlights

Only a few decades back, the members of The Island Golf Club near Dublin Ireland were parking their cars in the stylish village of Malahide near Portmarnock and Dublin Airport, and ferrying over via rowboat with their clubs to the course, located across the bay. Alas, today’s journey to The Island Golf Club is a bit less unique, 30 minutes around the peninsula, along some difficult, hard-to-follow roads, and it is possible to miss the turn and end up halfway to Belfast, even though you could see the course when you began! But the effort is so worth it. Out on “The Island” are dunes that rival the greatest of the southwest of Ireland, or any in the British Isles for that matter, an amazing surprise in this region of relatively flatter courses. The Island Golf Club is exciting, difficult, and tempting, and in our opinion the most difficult course in the Dublin area. And the setting at The Island Golf Club is beautiful, especially the back nine along the bay with scenic Malahide in the distance. The par-3 13th is an heroic challenge, a bit of Cypress Point or Kingsbarns except with the steeples of the village in the background. Our favorite hole at The Island Golf Club is the 14th, the former 1st, starting from the site of the original clubhouse. A short par-4, the fairway is, at its widest point, a mere 15 paces across. Anything right is in the bay, left is in deep rough. It is certainly the narrowest fairway in Ireland, and only “The Narrows” at Prestwick rivals it in this category. The Island Golf Club is a must to include on any Dublin Ireland golf itinerary, assuming of course that you can find it!
