Luffness New Golf Club, Aberlady, East Lothian, Scotland
For years golfers have turned the corner of the A198 heading towards great Gullane Hill and the courses of Gullane Golf Club, and wondered about the welcoming-looking course at the base of the hill, the first one you see driving in from Aberlady, enticing and obviously at ease with itself, not seeking much publicity. This is Luffness New Golf Club, nothing less than a miniature Muirfield, with turf that is arguably the finest in all of Scotland. It lacks only a few hundred yards on the scorecard, and there is no interest whatsoever among the membership in finding this additional length. Famous for its rolling terrain and true greens, it is a regular Open Final Qualifying Venue whenever the Open is at Muirfield, and was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1894 (the “New” is only in comparison to the club’s original links!). The club is a classic, one of the most private in Scotland, but those that show a sincere appreciation for the links are welcomed indeed. Jacket and tie only in the clubhouse, which only adds to the experience, and we suggest a 36-hole day, with lunch in between, just like the more famous club down the road! No starting times given, just permission to come and play when the tee is clear. Luffness New is a Hidden Links favorite!
