ST. GEORGE'S HILL GOLF CLUB
St. George’s Hill Golf Club in Weybridge, southwest of London, is a course that was truly ahead of its time. Decades before the trend of golf course communities, St. George’s Hill opened up with some of the most fantastic homes in England overlooking the course, on lots planned for the purpose, in a way not much different than today’s Muirfield Village in Ohio for example. The castle-like clubhouse serves as the centerpiece of the community, an imposing structure on top of the hill that dominates the view on 1, 9, and 18, and is one of those structures that immediately brings a sense of excitement upon first sight from the club entrance drive. The view from the spike bar is one of the best in the game, a panorama looking down on top of no less than six holes. In fact, Harry Colt designed 27 superb holes on this heathland acreage, holes thought by many to be the premier example of his work, such as #4, a short, downhill, driveable-but-dangerous par 4, #8 and #11, both superb par-3’s, with 8 over a deep chasm and 11 with the tiny green perched high on a shelf, and #20, on the “relief” nine but arguably the best par-4 on the property. We love Harry Colt’s classic courses in London, and a trip that includes the terrific trio of Sunningdale, Swinley Forest, and St. George’s Hill is all any enthusiast of classic courses could possibly ask for!
