ROYAL LYTHAM & ST. ANNE'S GOLF CLUB |
|---|
 | The sight of the classic, red-brick clubhouse of the Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s Golf Club in Lancashire is one of the most familiar in golf. This historic building has stood watch while players such as Jones, Player, Jacklin, Ballesteros, and Duval completed famous Open victories over this storied links. One of our favorite moments ever was the 72nd hole in 1974, with Gary Player over the green and his ball right up against the clubhouse. He somehow was able to play it despite the distraction of the members looking straight down him from the upstairs porch, and the old Club Secretary hanging his white-haired head out of his office window, no more than 5 feet away, a classic scene! Lytham is the one Open venue completely out of sight from the sea, located over 1 mile away across the railway that guards the right side of the outward nine. Nevertheless, this is pure links, a menacing terrain of humps, hillocks, and the most penalizing bunkers on the Open rotation, over 190 of them! Hemmed in by the wonderfully-English red brick houses, Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s is a cozy, intimate venue where spectators can view the action from the roofs, none better than behind the par-3 ninth, a scene straight out of Wrigley Field's left field bleachers. One of the best ways to experience any course in the British Isles is to stay at the club itself, and there is none better than Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s, where you can stay in the atmospheric dormy house behind the putting green, have full use of the club facilities with breakfast and dinner each day in the classic clubhouse, and play up to 4 rounds of golf, an experience never to be forgotten! | |
