The North Course at Quinta do Lago is one of the Algarve’s most enchanting layouts, evoking the charm and elegance of a classic Melbourne Sandbelt course. Fairways framed by stately umbrella pines guide you through holes set in truly magnificent locations, with greens often tucked into breathtaking natural sites. While a few walks between greens and tees are a little long, it’s a minor quibble in what is otherwise a remarkably enjoyable round.
One of the standout holes is the spectacular 361-metre par-four 12th, where a three-acre lake dominates the line of play. The fairway doglegs around the water, leaving a bold and strategic approach to a large, undulating green that will test even the most precise golfers.
With its collection of engaging par fives and a layout that feels both classic and thoughtful, the North Course is not to be overlooked. Since its closure in December 2013, the course has been elevated to new heights through a renovation by American architect Beau Welling, in collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley—enhancing its strategic depth, playability, and visual appeal. For any golfer visiting Quinta do Lago, the North Course is a must-play, offering a memorable experience in one of the Algarve’s finest golfing settings.
