Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club
Famous Royal Porthcawl is bordered on one side by the appropriately-named "Scare House," and indeed there is a very scary stretch of holes just on the opposite side. This is the back nine at neighboring Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, set amongst the tallest dunes of any links course in Wales and where anything straying from the straight-and-narrow path is severely punished. Yet despite this immensely challenging stretch of holes, Pyle & Kenfig is also a perfect "opening" course for a Wales Golf Vacation. The front nine, on the other side of the main road, is not nearly as taxing and offers the opportunity to get acclimated to the bouncy turf and seaside winds without ruining your scorecard. Located on high ground with ominous views of what awaits later in the round, one had better be in good shape when arriving on the 10th tee. But if your back nine is not quite up to par, birdies abound at the clubhouse's classic "Spike Bar," arguably the best 19th hole to be found in Wales. Pyle & Kenfig is more of an "everymans" club," not quite as private and exclusive as Royal Porthcawl for example. Nevertheless it is no less enjoyable, and with the welcome you will receive it is a welcome inclusion on any Wales itinerary!
