Forget anything and everything you may have heard about Ballybunion’s “New” Course, the Robert Trent Jones-designed Cashen Course, a course that has stirred the passions one way or the other from about everyone who has ever visited storied Ballybunion Golf Club. Admittedly, Ballybunion Cashen Course was a bit rough around the edges when it first opened, and exceedingly difficult. The cries from battered golfers were not dissimilar from what was said about Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s Chambers Bay during the 2015 US Open! Never though could anyone argue that the Cashen Course wasn’t extraordinarily spectacular! Time has softened the rough edges though at Ballybunion Cashen Course, and certain holes on the Cashen have been improved exponentially, The result is that Ballybunion Cashen Course is, in our estimation, top 10 in Ireland at least, and at best one of Ireland’s most elite tests. Take this layout and put it 10 miles down the road in Ballyheighe, and people would beat a path to its door.
