Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club, Cambridge England Highlights

The great Bernard Darwin, to many the most respected and admired of all golf writers, when asked to name the 18 greatest inland holes in Britain, chose two from a tiny nine-holer in Mildenhall, near Cambridge England. These are the 3rd and the 5th of the historic Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club, called by Herbert Warren Wind (perhaps #2 on the golf writers’ list!) “the greatest 9-hole course in the world,” and we would hardly disagree with him! A round here at Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club is a journey over a century back in time, on a links-like course with fast, firm, undulating greens not unlike famed Oakmont, that is simply a golfing treasure. Squeezing every square inch out of its tiny acreage, some tee shots at Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club fly directly over the previous green, with a double fairway, some near-double greens, and a public road in the middle of the 9th fairway all part of the challenge. Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club is also home to the Cambridge University Golf Club, and the club itself really helps make this a special place. The Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club clubhouse is small and cozy, with a couple of atmospheric rooms, a great bar, and roaring fireplace, with tons of history on the walls in the form of articles, old photos, and paintings. The main entrance (the “Men’s Entrance”) at Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club leads right in to the smallest locker room we have ever seen, although there is a larger one in the back. The members at Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club are welcoming and friendly, and eager to tell the story of their club. The tradition is that they play 9, have lunch and some ale, and then another 9. What a day there is to be had at Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club on your England golf tour!
