GOLF IN SPAIN--BEYOND THE COSTA DEL SOL
Spain is well-documented as perhaps the most rising of the world’s golf destinations, but most tours only include the Costa del Sol, way on the southern tip of Iberia, including famous Valderrama, site of the 1997 Ryder Cup. But there is even more to this wonderful golfing country, courses that preceeded this great coast and give a glimpse into the more traditional Spain. Fly into Madrid, but before you head to the coast stop for a day or two and play courses like the famous Club de Campo, one of the most historic clubs in Spain, host to many Spanish Opens, and site of Bing Crosby’s final round of golf, which he completed moments before passing on (what a way to go!). Then, head to the coast indeed, but consider starting north of the Costa del Sol, perhaps in Valencia at El Saler, years ago always rated as the number 1 course on Continental Europe, and perhaps still would be had all the tourists not been drawn farther south. It is half-links, with more than half the course in amongst the sand dunes right on the sea, with the other half challenging, inland holes, totally Spanish in character, with tall Cork trees lining each fairway. Stay right at the course, play it a couple of times, and head to beautiful Valencia, perhaps to a bullfight! You may even want to visit Barcelona and the Real Golf El Prat, another historic club, designed by Javier Arana, Spain’s most famous architect. Finally, it is time to head to the luxurious Costa del Sol, with the famous Valderrama and Sotogrande Old Course beckoning. If you are interested in Spain, but want to see some traditional, historic golf clubs as well as the gorgeous Costa del Sol, ours is the tour for you!
