MIDNIGHT GOLF AT THE ARCTIC OPEN IN ICELAND
InGOLFur Anarson, Iceland’s first settler, may not have played the game, but that hasn’t stopped Iceland from becoming a golf-crazed country! Today, people from all over the world journey each midsummer’s weekend to the Golfklubbur Akureyrar, the world’s northernmost championship golf course, to experience midnight golf in the annual Arctic Open tournament. Located on Iceland’s northern coast in the seaside fishing village of Akureyri, the course sprawls out across a grassy plateau surrounded by snow-streaked granite mountains and the green waters of Iceland’s biggest fjord. Its mountains of jagged rocks, deep volcanic fissures, incessant polar winds, and that toughest of golfing hazards, lava, tend to make a mockery of those attempting to play. “The best rounds are usually served by the clubhouse bar” is how a former club President once put it. It is worth venturing to the Arctic Open solely for the Icelandic welcoming party, featuring the traditional eating of Hakerl (pickled Shark meat), with a shot of Brennivin, Iceland’s 80 Proof firewater. Speaking of lava, our tour starts in Reykjavik at Iceland’s most famous lava course, Keiler, and also samples the traditional Golfklubbur Reykjavikur. For those wanting even more, the Volcanic Open commences immediately following the Arctic Open, in the remote Westman Islands. This tour is prepackaged and ready to go, just give us a call and be on your way to a destination you thought you’d never visit, but one you’ll never forget!
