GOLF IN BELGIUM--THE MONK'S WALK
Belgium? Where exactly is it? A common question we get asked, as Belgium seems to be left out when talking about the great countries of continental Europe. But what a country it is, especially for beer-drinking connoisseurs of fine golf! Begin in Brussels at the Royal Golf Club de Belgique, an ancient parkland course in the mold of the great and historic golf clubs of the northeast US, one of the most enjoyable courses we have ever played. The clubhouse is the former 18th century hunting lodge of King Leopold, Belgium’s first monarch, one of our all-time favorites. Afterwards, head to the Place de Sablon and the Leffe Brewery CafĂ©, serving the freshest of our favorite Belgian beer! Nearby is the battlefield where Napoleon met his Waterloo, marked by the pyramidial Butte de Lion monument, which overlooks Le Lion Course of the Royal Waterloo Golf Club, home of two superb courses. From Brussels, head north to Kapellan, near Antwerp, the diamond capital of Europe, and the Royal Antwerp Golf Club, another classic club with traditional clubhouse. You will think you have been transported to the North Carolina sandhills, with the sandy soil and tall pines so reminiscent of Pinehurst. Then, head to the sea and the superb links at Royal Zoute Golf Club near Knokke, home to the annual Belgacom Open on the European PGA Tour. Barely the size of Ohio, Belgium is home to over 300 breweries, producing what to many is the finest beer on the planet. Many of the brews are from the monks, with recipes dating back to the middle ages. We recommend Leffe, Grimbergen, Hoegaarten, Orval, Chimay, Duvel…in fact, just try them all!
