For something a bit different, and a real change of pace, head inland to the heart of Ireland and the Glasson Golf & Country Club, located near Athlone on the edge of Lough Ree. Here you will find one of the most relaxed atmospheres we have ever had the privilege to experience. Owned by the Reid family, and run by their lovely daughter Fidelma, they have turned their family farmland into a beautiful and challenging golf course, have built an adjoining 29-bedroom, 4-star hotel, and have made the old family home into the clubhouse! Although it must be a strange feeling to be standing in the corner of the bar, knowing it used to be your childhood bedroom, the Reids have succeeded in creating an environment that is guaranteed to send you home relaxed. The hotel is one of the most comfortable in Ireland, traditional yet very modern, extremely quiet with very large bedrooms. The course itself, designed by Christy O’Connor Jr., is one of the most scenic anywhere, with sweeping views across the property down to the beautiful lough. Glasson is especially perfect for couples or for groups traveling from west-to-east or vice-versa, or even as a one-night getaway from Dublin. The hotel and course are enough to justify a night or two, but combine it with dinner at Wineport Lodge (Blue Book recommended) across the lough from the course, followed by some pints in Grogan’s, a low-ceilinged, high-atmosphere local pub, and you have a getaway to really remember!
